Starting to have odd dreams about Dad now that he's more or less unaware of who I am to him. Latest one was heartbreaking:
-------------------------------------------
I dreamt that in the not-very-distant future, time travel becomes possible, if rare, expensive, and difficult. Somehow, my mom finagles a time trip for me. For various reasons, some personal, some technical, I opt to go to the 1950s, in Harford County, to see Dad as a teenager.
When I arrive, I find Dad easily enough. This being a dream, he doesn't really look like himself (most people I actually know look differently in my dreams). I introduce myself, and tell him who I really am, his daughter from the future. Since he's been a fan of sci-fi since childhood, he both believes me and takes this in stride, and is delighted!
I end up hanging out with him and his teenage friends at a casual get-together at someone's house. At one point, I clarify to a teenage girl interested in him, "Oh, don't worry, I'm no competition. He's like family to me..." We spend the rest of the evening goofing off, dancing, sneaking drinks, and I watch Dad be the energetic, goofy, teenage version of himself.
Later, as the party begins to break up and very few people are left. Dad and I are talking a bit, I'm sitting on a chair, he's standing and sort of dancing around a bit tossing paper cups into the trash like it's basketball. He whirls in my direction arms outstretched, so I jump up and land right in them, he's cradling me entirely off the floor, and whirls me around. I laugh in delight and tell him, "I know it's going to be many years before we meet again, but I want you to know Dad, that I love you very much."
He looks me in the eye, still holding me and says, "I love you more."
----------------------------------------------
I woke up sobbing.
